About me
Ben is the founder of Understory, a global consultancy specialising in media, entertainment, hospitality, and culture. Founded in Copenhagen and with offices in Sydney, the company works with the world’s leading creators, change makers, media owners, and companies, to turn great ideas into powerful stories, brands, and businesses.
Before launching Understory, Ben worked with the internationally acclaimed Noma, five-times recognised as the world’s best restaurant, film and television production companies Shine Group and FremantleMedia, and record label Warner Music Group.
Ben has served on the board of the non-profit MAD referred to as “food world’s G-20” by the Wall Street Journal, and is the Executive Producer of Omnivore, the upcoming eight-part docuseries with René Redzepi, Fifth Season, and director Cary Fukunaga for AppleTV+.
During his seven years as Chief Operating Officer at Noma, the business grew from a single restaurant into a diversified hospitality group, incubator, and media company. Ben also served as Board Member of MAD, the 501c3 non-profit referred to as “food world’s G-20” by the Wall Street Journal. As Group CEO of Shine 360°, the brand and commercial rights division of Shine Group, founded by Elisabeth Murdoch, Ben worked across the company’s scripted and unscripted portfolio, but is best known for leading the expansion of MasterChef from television franchise into a $500m global brand powerhouse.
Ben has given talks and presentations to SXSW Sydney, Saïd Business School (University of Oxford), National Film and Television School (London), Arison School of Business (IDC Herzliya), McCarthy Institute (University of San Francisco), the Fashion Institute of Technology (University of New York), the Australian Film Television and Radio School, and Constructive Journalism Institute (Aarhus University), and has participated as a jury member at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and as advisory board member of Screen Producers Australia. He has been interviewed by global media including the Sydney Morning Herald, Bloomberg, Australian Financial Review and Sky News, and recognised by Encore Magazine as one of the most powerful people in film and television.
